Since about 1273, the DOMÄNENHOF SCHLOSS HOCHHEIM was a stately country estate belonging to the cathedral chapter in Mainz. Since then, the tithe, or tenth part of all natural produce collected from the taxable subjects, especially crops and wine, was brought and stored in the large stone "Zehntscheune“ (Tithe barn). The late-baroque castle and the estate buildings in the "Domdechaney", above the vineyard of the same name, were built around 1750 as a summer residence for the dean of the cathedral chapter in Mainz.
After secularisation, the castle and the estate belonged to the Dukes of Nassau, and princess Caroline Friederike von Anhalt-Köthen resided here. After 1866 the estate became Royal Prussian Domain and was later used as a depot for the Federal Winery of Hessen in Kloster Eberbach. Sold in 2006, the Domänenhof is now privately owned.
Since 2006, the castle, which was damaged during WWII, and the estate buildings have been completely renovated as a historical complex. Today it is used by the DOMDECHANT WERNER WINE ESTATE.
The tithe barn is used for collecting and pressing the harvested grapes as well as for cultural events and festivities.

The family-run wine estate DOMDECHANT WERNER is located about 300 m west of here. The estate was acquired by Johann Baptista Werner, a trader from Mainz, from Count York in 1780. His eldest son Dr. Franz Werner (1770 to 1835) was the long-standing dean of the cathedral chapter in Mainz and was later elected to bishop. His great historical achievement was rescuing the ruins of Mainz cathedral, which had been burnt down and ransacked by Prussian and Austrian troops during the siege of Mainz. The cathedral was rebuilt under his direction. During these wartimes Dean Werner also managed the family wine estate in Hochheim until his death. The wine estate is still in the family. A large part of the prime vineyard DOMDECHANEY belongs to the family wine estate.

Now in their 7th generation, the owning family has been producing high-quality Rieslings on prime vineyards in Hochheim such as Domdechaney, Kirchenstück and Hölle, since 1780. The wines from this VDP-estate (Prädikat wine estate) are exported to over 25 countries around the world – spreading the excellent reputation of the Riesling from Hochheim.
