The ancient Romans already knew how to use water wheels to harness the power of flowing water to grind grain. At the beginning all mills were powered by undershot wheels, whose lower part is immersed in the water. The wheel was rotated just by the flow of water alone. The first overshot wheels were constructed in the 14th century. Typically, the water is channelled to the top of the wheel. Compared to undershot wheels, this technology doubled the efficiency of similar sized water wheels at the same rate of water flow.

The Wickerbach powered 23 mills along a stretch of 24 km.

Eight mills have been officially documented over the centuries in the parishes Flörsheim and Wicker. The oldest is the Strassenmühle (Street Mill) in Wicker, which first appears as the "Eppsteiner Mühle" in a document from 1318. Faced with grave financial problems, the Counts of Eppstein sold the mill to the Landgrave of Hessen. This is why the mill was called "Landgräfliche Mühle" (Sovereign Mill). Later the name changed to "Wickermühle" or "Strassenmühle". The millrace was diverted from the Wickerbach in the parish of Massenheim. The second row of trees growing parallel to the actual Wickerbach marks the former course of the millrace.

Mills were often targeted by marauding soldiers. They were often ransacked and destroyed. A document from 1648, reports that all three mills in Wicker were burnt down.

The mills in Flörsheim lie further downstream. The Wiesenmühle ("Meadow Mill") was built in 1699 and is a popular destination today. The Obermühle ("Upper Mill"), now known as the Traisermühle, was probably built at the beginning of 1600.

Close by lies the Untermühle ("Lower Mill"), which is known as the Engelsmühle, which recalls the  family name of a miller. The Taubertsmühle in Flörsheim, first documented in 1370, is named after its first owner Claus von der Tauber. The Hopfenmühle ("Hop Mill") is first recorded in a court record book in 1445.
