The Upper Rheingau Wine Trail - Kostheim

length 18 km

An invitation for your senses

The vines and vineyards on the sunny south slopes of the Main and Wickerbach valleys have characterised the landscape and culture along the Lower Main since the Middle Ages. The harmonious mixture of traditions and modern lifestyle is unique among  European wine-growing regions.

Welcome to the “ Upper Rheingau Wine Experience Trail”! Join us on a self-guided walk through the vineyards in this exciting landscape and discover the history of this region. Learn all about the Celts and the Romans, about colourful characters such as Gutenberg, Napoleon or Queen Victoria, the first mention of the Riesling grape, lignite mining along the River Main or about "terrestrial snail limestone" .

And of course the “Wine-growing Region Upper Rheingau“ would like to present itself as part of the cultural region Rheingau.

The Wine Experience Trail

passes through the parishes of Massenheim, Wicker, Flörsheim, Hochheim and Kostheim. Although these wine-growing communities are located along the rivers Main and Wickerbach, they are traditionally part of the Hessian wine-growing region Rheingau. The name of this trail reflects this situation.

The main trail is 18 km long and takes you to the best viewpoints and most interesting sites in this landscape. You are now at the access point in Kostheim.

There are also circular routes, which will allow you to explore various sections of the trail.

Cultural Region Rheingau

The Rheingau landscape is one of the historically and culturally most important regions in Germany. The Rheingau is world famous for its historical castles and abbeys, but most of all, for its celebrated wines. But the Rheingau is much more than a unique cultural region and cultural landscape. It is also a place of learning, as well as landscape of pleasure and enjoyment.  A region, where culture is not only seen as a copy of history, but as an active part of life - here, in the “Cultural Region Rheingau”.
