Johannes Gutenberg, who was born in Mainz, did not only invent the printing press but the method for printing books with moveable type. His invention revolutionised the possibilities for producing documents and especially books. His innovation triggered a “media revolution” in Europe. Many years have past since print media were the key consumer item produced in writing. Technical innovations, computers and internet have sparked a second media revolution. This has been accompanied by many new developments in the digital world as well as technical innovations such as highly complex printing machines. The art of printing as developed by Gutenberg has evolved into an art of planning, adjusting machines and controlling.
