The first wine museum in Hessen was opened in 2010 and resides in the beautiful vaulted cellar of the House of Associations. The institution received financial support from the Federal Ministry for Economics and wine-grower Klaus Schmikl from Hochheim participated in its conception. Walking through the museum, the visitor will learn about the work of the wine-grower in the vineyard and the cellar, from soil cultivation and plant protection to wine-making and sealing the bottles.

The different soils found in these vineyards are presented in large glass containers, for example loess or clay marl.

Romantic vineyards?

The men working in the vineyards had no easy life. Every morning they went to work carrying their  grubbers, knapsack and a wire sling. The sling was fastened to a stick in the morning and left in the vineyard. In the evening they went to check whether they had caught a rabbit or another animal. Although forbidden, they took the catch home as a welcome addition to the poor family's menu.
