2400 litres of wine...
were drunk when the foundation stone for the church St. Peter and Paul was laid in 1730. The people of Hochheim and communities on this and the other side of the Main had reasons to celebrate. They had helped to build the church, by supplying building materials, money and free transport.
The church was dedicated in 1732. After that, all money had been used up and it was 40 years later that the interior of the church could be decorated. A painter from Schwaben called Johann Baptist Enderle was brought in to paint the frescoes. He painted the life and death of the two patron saints of the church on the ceiling in delicate colours. This gave substance to the biblical accounts and legends.
The funeral procession of St Boniface passed through Hochheim from his Abbey in Fulda in 754. This event was recorded in the life story of St Sturmius, the first abbot in Fulda - incidentally the first official record of the Hochheim. Thus the church St. Peter and Paul is also a station along the Boniface route.
After their restoration (1998–2005), former President of the German Foundation for Monument Preservation Professor Gottfried Kiesow placed the frescos of St. Peter and Paul at the top of the Rococo fresco paintings in Hessen. The delicate colours of the ceiling fresco where all but invisible during the last century. Candle soot, several coats of paint and unsuitable timber treatments had nearly ruined the fresco. The restoration of the precious paintings was made possible by the immense commitment of the people of Hochheim and the financial help from public offices and private sponsors.

Kirchenstück, Reichestal or Hölle

Wine-lovers appreciate all three vineyards. Every year, the grapes that ripen in the parish vineyards of St. Peter and Paul yield high quality wines which have won many important awards.

St. Peter and Paul and St. Boniface serve about 7000 catholics in Hochheim. They are the hubs of the varied social life here.

Belvedere – beautiful view

is the name of a small terrace over the former ossuary built into the town wall behind the church. On a clear day, the view from here stretches from the far away Odenwald to the Rheinhessen region. On the right, it is possible to see Mainz over the tops of the vineyards. Hochheim has always had a good relationship with Mainz: from 1273 onwards (until secularisation), the village belonged to the cathedral chapter in Mainz, which had bought it for "1150 Aachener Mark" from the cathedral chapter in Cologne.
