The "Upper Rheingau Wine Experience Trail" welcomes you to Keramag/Falkenberg district of Flörsheim am Main, an industrial and business location with a long history.
The Wine Experience Trail leads you through the hilly landscape of the "Flörsheimer Schweiz" to the Wickerer Warte. In the opposite direction you will join the secondary road and pass through a residential area from where the trail takes you through the vineyards to reach the town Hochheim am Main.
Once and now industry and settlement on the Falkenberg
Production processes need energy. In historical times, water supplied the necessary power. The Wickerbach powered 23 mills along a stretch of 24 km. The Obermühle (Upper Mill) and Wiesenmühle (meadow Mill) are located near this panel.
The parking lot is enclosed by limestone rocks. They contain fossils such as clams and snails. The marine limestone was preserved here on the Falkenberg, because of the special geological situation along the rift. Close by are quarries from which the light-yellow limestone was extracted. Many buildings in Flörsheim, Wicker, Massenheim and Hochheim have been built from this characteristic rock.
Beside the road L3028, lies an industrial monument, the "old lime kilns". They bear witness to the early industrialisation of the region. The kilns date back to the 18th century. Until the 19th century, lime kilns were found in nearly every town. These kilns were usually built on the outskirts of the town because of the large volumes of smoke they produced.
In the 20th century the company Dyckerhoff extracted limestone from quarries on the Falkenberg. Today the lake indicates how deep the quarry once was. The quarry beyond the secondary road has been partially recultivated and converted to a vineyard.
In 1912 the company KeramAG built a ceramics factory and a worker's settlement. This residential area was extended after 1945 to provide quarters for the newly arrived war refugees and expellees.
Following the closure of KeramAG in 1982, the premises were developed into a modern industrial park.
