Hock“ – the english love the Rheingau wine
Many English people call a good white wine from the Rhine "Hock". But Why?
In reference to the city of Hochheim the term “Hock” is often used today in English-speaking countries as a synonym for Rhine wine. The term came up in England for the first time in 1625.
Queen Victoria ate ripe grapes from the Hochheim site “Dechantenruhe“ during her visit to Germany in 1850. At the urging of the owner at the time the Queen shortly afterwards gave the name “Queen Victoria Mountain“ to this vineyard. The Victoria Memorial was built in this vineyard in 1854.
